Strahan Goes Out On Top
If you’re going to retire, this is the way to do it. There’s nothing better than bowing out when you are on top of the world. As it stands, the New York Giants are the reigning World Champions of the NFL. Which means that Michael Strahan is retiring as a World Champ.
It’s been
15 long years of professional football’s grind for the guy who has been known as one of the most friendly, likable and humorous footballs players around. This time last year, things weren’t looking too well for Strahan. He was going through an ugly divorce, in which his former wife was seeking an estimated $15 million (there’s nothing worse than a woman scorned). And in the fall of 2007, he held out for a larger contract and didn’t report to training camp as scheduled.
He was called “selfish” for holding out, when he was really just toying with the idea of retiring. Then he decided he’d give it one more year. And what a year it was. The Giants ended up with a championship ring. And Strahan was back on top. It seemed only fitting that on June 9, he told Jay Glazer of Foxsports.com, “It’s time, I’m done.”
My guess is that he’s far from done, meaning you’ll see his friendly mug on television as a football commentator soon enough.
*Strahan was voted NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2001.
