Can Anybody Stop The Heels?

I know it’s a little early to start speculating regarding the NCAA Tournament, especially since March Madness is three months away. With all the twist and turns that occur throughout the college basketball season and throughout the tournament itself, who knows what could happen.

But it’s hard to think that this just might be North Carolina’s year.

The Tar Heels are the first unanimous preseason number one team, in The Associated Press poll.

If anyone saw the hyped-up game against Michigan State last night, which analyst predicted would be a hard-fought buzzer-beater, the result pretty much speaks for itself.

Tyler Hansbrough led the Heels with 23 points and 11 rebounds, catapulting his team to a 98-63 trounce of the Spartans.

At 8 – 0, I’m starting to wonder who in the field can give this team a run for its money. Michigan State was supposed to do that and look what happened.

I guess I’ll wait patiently for the Duke/UNC match-up while the rest of you basketball nuts check out Hoops Fantasy for info, insight and advice on your basketball fantasy leagues.

Sean Avery Suspended Indefinitely

I was bit surprised to see that Sean Avery had been suspended indefinitely by the NHL for comments he made off the ice. I mean, it’s not like he accidentally shot himself in the leg or anything … kidding … bad joke.

Ahem.

Sean Avery was known around the league as a “bad mouth” for comments made on the ice to other players. He’s spend plenty of time in the penalty box because of his mouth. But now it looks at though he’ll be spending plenty of time off the ice because of his mouth.

Avery was suspended only hours after he made public crude comments concerning his ex-girlfriends, who are now dating other professional hockey players. Jealous much?

According to Yahoo! Sports, Avery made the comment while talking casually with reporters in Calgary after a morning skate. He walked up to them, asked if there were cameras present and said these profound words of wisdom:

Sean Avery is a lot like Plaxico Burress in that both of them have taken their good fortune and talent for granted. And both of them are throwing it away in the most stupid, ungrateful and pathetic way.

What’s Up With Plaxico Burress?

Anybody? Can you fill me in here? What in the world is wrong with Plaxico Burress?

In case you haven’t heard, the pro bowl wide receiver of the New York Giants accidentally shot himself in the leg on Friday night with his own gun.

You don’t have to read that sentence again. Trust me, it’s true.

Yahoo! Sports reported today that Burress was led out of a police precinct in handcuffs after surrendering to weapons possession charges. Apparently he planned on pleading “not guilty” during his court appearance.

Not guilty?

The evidence is in the gun shot wound, is it not?

The details are as follows: Around 12:05 a.m., as Burress was being escorted to a VIP area with a drink in one hand, he somehow ended up fumbling his gun and it discharged, hitting his thigh.

Burress was allowed to bypass security at the club even though they knew he was armed.

I’m wondering why he felt he needed to carry a gun in the first place?

I don’t get it. It seems that Burress is hellbent on sabotaging his NFL career one way or another. Can someone explain this to me?

Game Of The Week — Week 12

Every week throughout the 2008-2009 football season I am going to pick a “Game of the Week.”

The purpose of this post is to talk about a match-up that I think is the most significant out of all the scheduled NFL games that are going to be played the following Sunday.

After looking at the schedule, my pick for the Game of the Week is …

New York Jets at Tennessee Titans
Sunday, 1:00 p.m. — CBS

Reasons Why:

1. I personally think the New York Jets are more than capable of knocking off the Titans from their undefeated pedestal. Can they do it? All we can do it watch and see.

2. The New York Jets proved last week with a win over New England that they are legitimate contenders. At 7 - 3, they can cement their standing in the AFC East, and the entire AFC for that matter, with a win against the all-mighty Titans.

3. The Titans are 10 - 0. Trust me, I’m just as shocked as you are. I do not think that they will finish the regular season without a loss and I believe that first loss is going to come against the Jets. This game may actually be a foreshadowing of the AFC Championship game.

4. I don’t know what it is about Brett Favre, but when he is under center the entire football team exudes confidence. I’ve noticed the difference between the Jets this season over last season, and (vice versa) the way the Packers have seemed to lose confidence since last season. If you don’t think Favre has a role in both scenarios, you’re kidding yourself.

A few readers wanted a couple more picks for “game of the week.” The reason why I only pick one game is to highlight a single game that would have an impact on the league overall. While there are plenty of interesting match-ups out there, there is usually one game that sticks out from the rest that makes people think, “That looks like a great match-up. I want to watch that!.”

But, in order to humor some readers, here are a couple of other interesting match-ups for the week:

• New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins 1 p.m. CBS (AFC Divisional Match-up)
• Buffalo Bills at Kansas City Chiefs 1 p.m. CBS (Can the Bills snap a 4-game losing streak?)
• New York Giants at Arizona Cardinals 4:15 p.m. FOX (Key NFC Match-up)
• Indianapolis Colts at San Diego Chargers Sunday, 8:15 p.m. NBC

“It Girls” Essentials Contest Worth Looking Into

Every now and then I get contacted about a promotion of some sort that involves athletic women or women who are really involved in the sports world. This one caught my interest so I thought I’d share it with all of you. I’m taking a break from commenting on today’s sports issues to bring you news about the “It Girls” Essentials Contest.

If You Want To Score A Goal, Just Drop Your Pants

That’s the strategy that Catania, an Italian soccer team in Italy’s top division, imparted in their latest game.

When lining up for a free kick, the players simultaneously dropped their shorts in an effort to block the goalies view.

I have a question here. Maybe I’m naive, but would that really make that much of a difference? You would think the mere act of dropping shorts would be a distraction, but blocking a goalie’s line of sight?

Regardless, according to Yahoo! Sports, “the Sicilian team carried out the maneuver to perfection Sunday. Three players dropped their shorts practically to their knees so Torino goalie Matteo Sereni couldn’t see the kick by Giuseppe Mascara, who scored during Catania’s 3-2 victory.”

So, is it a gimmick or an actual strategy? Furthermore, is it even a legal move?

Considering that referees haven’t ever seen this before, they probably didn’t even know how to approach it. But if you see this “strategy” spread throughout world leagues then a rule of some kind is going to have to be enacted.

As for the guys who are actually dropping their shorts … I sure hope that they’re wearing their cups!

Eri Yoshida Is The First Woman To Play Professional Baseball

I saw this post on the front page of Yahoo! Sports this a.m. and thought to myself, “that is so cool!”

You probably have no idea who Eri Yoshida is and, really, I didn’t either until I read the article. Yoshida is a 16-year-old Japanese school girl who was recently drafted to play professional baseball in a new Japanese pro league. She’s a right-hander who is only 5 feet and 114 pounds, throws a sidearm knuckleball and is a big fan of Boston Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.

Apparently, Yoshida threw a hitless inning against male batters during a tryout this month and was among 33 players picked in the draft.

Now that’s awesome!

Do The Packers Regret Dealing Brett Favre?

I know, I know. I said I wasn’t ever going to mention his name again and I held true to that for a little while. But, when it comes to Brett Favre, sometimes you just can’t talk football without him.

Did you see that game last night? I did. The Jets and Patriots went at it just like I thought they would and it was incredibly entertaining. Favre played brilliantly.

The New York Jets are now 7-3 and in first place in the AFC East. And I was thinking about how the Green Bay Packers, at 4 -5 overall, feel at this point in the season. Like him or not, Favre has had an immediate impact on the Jets. Would the Packers have been better off keeping him? Do you think the Packers regret dealing him to the Jets?

That is the question for this week: Do the Packers regret dealing Brett Favre?

My argument is this:
Regret is a strong word. I think that maybe, just maybe, there’s some second-guessing going on. But overall, I think that the Packers are happy with the decision that they made because they knew they were investing in the future of the organization. Sure, Aaron Rodgers is going to have some growing pains. It’s normal. I’m sure that they wish he would come along faster, but you can’t rush these things. And even though I feel that they were a stronger team with Favre at the helm, I think that the Packers feel at peace with their decision.

If the Jets end up going to the Superbowl and the Packers don’t make the playoffs however, I think the word “regret” might just apply.

The results of the economic poll are in! The question was: Will the economy affect professional sports’ attendance? Most of you think yes, it will.
