<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I know it’s a little early to start speculating regarding the <strong>NCAA Tournament</strong>, especially since <strong>March Madness</strong> is three months away. With all the twist and turns that occur throughout the college basketball season and throughout the tournament itself, who knows what could happen.</p>
<p>But it’s hard to think that this just might be <strong>North Carolina’s</strong> year.</p>
<p>The <strong>Tar Heels</strong> are the first unanimous preseason number one team, in <strong>The Associated Press</strong> poll.</p>
<p>If anyone saw the hyped-up game against <strong>Michigan State</strong> last night, which analyst predicted would be a hard-fought buzzer-beater, the result pretty much speaks for itself. <img src='http://www.girlsdigsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/tylerhansbrough_nc.jpg' align='right' alt='tylerhansbrough_nc.jpg' /></p>
<p><strong>Tyler Hansbrough</strong> led the <strong>Heels</strong> with 23 points and 11 rebounds, catapulting his team to a 98-63 trounce of the <strong>Spartans</strong>. </p>
<p>At 8 – 0, I’m starting to wonder who in the field can give this team a run for its money. <strong>Michigan State</strong> was supposed to do that and look what happened.</p>
<p>I guess I’ll wait patiently for the <strong>Duke/UNC</strong> match-up while the rest of you basketball nuts check out <a href="http://www.hoopsfantasy.com/">Hoops Fantasy</a> for info, insight and advice on your basketball fantasy leagues.<br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I was bit surprised to see that <strong>Sean Avery</strong> had been suspended indefinitely by the NHL for comments he made off the ice. I mean, it&#8217;s not like he accidentally <a href="http://www.girlsdigsports.com/whats-up-with-plaxico-burress/">shot himself in the leg or anything</a> &#8230; kidding &#8230; bad joke.</p>
<p>Ahem.</p>
<p><strong>Sean Avery </strong>was known around the league as a &#8220;bad mouth&#8221; for comments made on the ice to other players. He&#8217;s spend plenty of time in the penalty box because of his mouth. But now it looks at though he&#8217;ll be spending plenty of time off the ice because of his mouth.</p>
<p><strong>Avery</strong> was suspended only hours after he made public crude comments concerning his ex-girlfriends, who are now dating other professional hockey players. Jealous much?</p>
<p>According to <strong><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=ap-stars-averysuspended">Yahoo! Sports</a></strong>, <strong>Avery</strong> made the comment while talking casually with reporters in <strong>Calgary</strong> after a morning skate. He walked up to them, asked if there were cameras present and said these profound words of wisdom:</p>
<div align="center"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3HN8L0W8ewY&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed> </div>
<p><strong>Sean Avery</strong> is a lot like <strong>Plaxico Burress</strong> in that both of them have taken their good fortune and talent for granted. And both of them are throwing it away in the most stupid, ungrateful and pathetic way. </p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Anybody? Can you fill me in here? What in the world is wrong with <strong>Plaxico Burress</strong>?</p>
<p>In case you haven&#8217;t heard, the pro bowl wide receiver of the <strong>New York Giants</strong> accidentally shot himself in the leg on Friday night with his own gun. </p>
<p>You don&#8217;t have to read that sentence again. Trust me, it&#8217;s true. <img src='http://www.girlsdigsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/plaxicoburress_nc.jpg' align='left' alt='plaxicoburress_nc.jpg' /></p>
<p><strong>Yahoo! Sports</strong> reported today that <strong>Burress</strong> was led out of a police precinct in handcuffs after surrendering to weapons possession charges. Apparently he planned on pleading &#8220;not guilty&#8221; during his court appearance.</p>
<p>Not guilty?</p>
<p>The evidence is in the gun shot wound, is it not? </p>
<p>The details are as follows: Around 12:05 a.m., as <strong>Burress</strong> was being escorted to a VIP area with a drink in one hand, he somehow ended up fumbling his gun and it discharged, hitting his thigh. </p>
<p><strong>Burress</strong> was allowed to bypass security at the club even though they knew he was armed. </p>
<p>I&#8217;m wondering why he felt he needed to carry a gun in the first place?</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t get it. It seems that <strong>Burress</strong> is hellbent on sabotaging his <strong>NFL</strong> career one way or another. Can someone explain this to me? </p>
<p>Please?</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Every week throughout the <strong>2008-2009 football season</strong> I am going to pick a <strong>“Game of the Week.” </strong></p>
<p>The purpose of this post is to talk about a match-up that I think is the most significant out of all the scheduled <strong>NFL games</strong> that are going to be played the following Sunday.</p>
<p>After looking at the schedule, my pick for the <strong>Game of the Week</strong> is …</p>
<p><img src='http://www.girlsdigsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/rpltnewyorkjets65-77-thumb.jpg' align='left' alt='rpltnewyorkjets65-77-thumb.jpg' /><br />
<img src='http://www.girlsdigsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/3766939044.jpg' alt='3766939044.jpg' /></p>
<p><strong>New York Jets</strong> at <strong>Tennessee Titans</strong><br />
Sunday, 1:00 p.m. — CBS</p>
<p>Reasons Why:</p>
<p>1. I personally think the <strong>New York Jets</strong> are more than capable of knocking off the <strong>Titans</strong> from their undefeated pedestal. Can they do it? All we can do it watch and see.</p>
<p>2. The <strong>New York Jets</strong> proved last week with a win over <strong>New England</strong> that they are legitimate contenders. At 7 - 3, they can cement their standing in the <strong>AFC East</strong>, and the entire <strong>AFC</strong> for that matter, with a win against the all-mighty <strong>Titans</strong>.</p>
<p>3. The <strong>Titans</strong> are 10 - 0. Trust me, I&#8217;m just as shocked as you are. I do not think that they will finish the regular season without a loss and I believe that first loss is going to come against the <strong>Jets</strong>. This game may actually be a foreshadowing of the <strong>AFC Championship</strong> game.</p>
<p>4. I don&#8217;t know what it is about <strong>Brett Favre</strong>, but when he is under center the entire football team exudes confidence. I&#8217;ve noticed the difference between the <strong>Jets</strong> this season over last season, and (vice versa) the way the <strong>Packers</strong> have seemed to lose confidence since last season. If you don&#8217;t think <strong>Favre </strong> has a role in both scenarios, you&#8217;re kidding yourself. </p>
<p>A few readers wanted a couple more picks for &#8220;game of the week.&#8221; The reason why I only pick one game is to highlight a single game that would have an impact on the league overall. While there are plenty of interesting match-ups out there, there is usually one game that sticks out from the rest that makes people think, &#8220;That looks like a great match-up. I want to watch that!.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, in order to humor some readers, here are a couple of other interesting match-ups for the week:</p>
<p><strong><br />
• New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins 1 p.m. CBS (AFC Divisional Match-up)<br />
• Buffalo Bills at Kansas City Chiefs	1 p.m. CBS (Can the Bills snap a 4-game losing streak?)<br />
• New York Giants at Arizona Cardinals 4:15 p.m. FOX (Key NFC Match-up)<br />
• Indianapolis Colts at San Diego Chargers Sunday, 8:15 p.m. NBC </strong> </p>
<p>Enjoy!</p>

<p>The reason I decided to talk about this contest is because the latest <strong>&#8220;It Girl&#8221;</strong> is an <strong>ESPN</strong> intern in Austin, Texas, and that&#8217;s one of the reasons why she was chosen. Check out her <a href="<a href="http://www.itgirlessentials.com/">“It Girl’s Guide to Sports!&#8221;</a></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>That&#8217;s the strategy that <strong>Catania</strong>, an <strong>Italian soccer</strong> team in Italy&#8217;s top division, imparted in their latest game. <img src='http://www.girlsdigsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/cataniasoccerteam_nc.jpg' align='right' alt='cataniasoccerteam_nc.jpg' /></p>
<p>When lining up for a free kick, the players simultaneously dropped their shorts in an effort to block the goalies view.</p>
<p>I have a question here. Maybe I&#8217;m naive, but would that really make that much of a difference? You would think the mere act of dropping shorts would be a distraction, but blocking a goalie&#8217;s line of sight? </p>
<p>Regardless, according to <a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=ap-italy-shortsdown&#038;prov=ap&#038;type=lgns">Yahoo! Sports</a>, &#8220;the Sicilian team carried out the maneuver to perfection Sunday. Three players dropped their shorts practically to their knees so Torino goalie <strong>Matteo Sereni </strong>couldn’t see the kick by <strong>Giuseppe Mascara</strong>, who scored during Catania’s 3-2 victory.&#8221; </p>
<p>So, is it a gimmick or an actual strategy? Furthermore, is it even a legal move?</p>
<p>Considering that referees haven&#8217;t ever seen this before, they probably didn&#8217;t even know how to approach it. But if you see this &#8220;strategy&#8221; spread throughout world leagues then a rule of some kind is going to have to be enacted. </p>
<p>As for the guys who are actually dropping their shorts &#8230; I sure hope that they&#8217;re wearing their cups! </p>

<p>You probably have no idea who <strong>Eri Yoshida</strong> is and, really, I didn&#8217;t either until I read the article. <img src='http://www.girlsdigsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/eriyoshida_nc.jpg' align='right' alt='eriyoshida_nc.jpg' /> Yoshida is a 16-year-old Japanese school girl who was recently drafted to play professional baseball in a new Japanese pro league. She&#8217;s a right-hander who is only 5 feet and 114 pounds, throws a sidearm knuckleball and is a big fan of <strong>Boston Red Sox </strong>knuckleballer <strong>Tim Wakefield</strong>.</p>
<p>Apparently, <strong>Yoshida</strong> threw a hitless inning against male batters during a tryout this month and was among 33 players picked in the draft.</p>
<p>Now that&#8217;s awesome!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I know, I know. I said I wasn&#8217;t ever going to mention his name again and I held true to that for a little while. But, when it comes to <strong>Brett Favre</strong>, sometimes you just can&#8217;t talk football without him.</p>
<p>Did you see that <a href="http://www.girlsdigsports.com/game-of-the-week-%e2%80%94-week-11/">game last night</a>? I did. The <strong>Jets</strong> and <strong>Patriots</strong> went at it just like I thought they would and it was incredibly entertaining. <strong>Favre</strong> played brilliantly. <img src='http://www.girlsdigsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/brettfavre_nc.jpg' align='left' alt='brettfavre_nc.jpg' /></p>
<p><strong>The New York Jets</strong> are now 7-3 and in first place in the <strong>AFC East</strong>. And I was thinking about how the Green Bay Packers, at 4 -5 overall, feel at this point in the season. Like him or not, <strong>Favre</strong> has had an immediate impact on the <strong>Jets</strong>. Would the <strong>Packers </strong>have been better off keeping him? Do you think the <strong>Packers</strong> regret dealing him to the <strong>Jets?</strong></p>
<p>That is the question for this week: <strong>Do the Packers regret dealing Brett Favre?</strong></p>
<p>(Don&#8217;t forget to cast your vote in the poll!)</p>
<p><strong>My argument is this:</strong><br />
Regret is a strong word. I think that maybe, just maybe, there&#8217;s some second-guessing going on. But overall, I think that the <strong>Packers</strong> are happy with the decision that they made because they knew they were investing in the future of the organization. Sure, <strong>Aaron Rodgers</strong> is going to have some growing pains. It&#8217;s normal. I&#8217;m sure that they wish he would come along faster, but you can&#8217;t rush these things. And even though I feel that they were a stronger team with <strong>Favre</strong> at the helm, I think that the <strong>Packers</strong> feel at peace with their decision.</p>
<p>If the <strong>Jets</strong> end up going to the Superbowl and the <strong>Packers </strong>don&#8217;t make the playoffs however, I think the word &#8220;regret&#8221; might just apply.</p>
<blockquote><p>
<strong>The results of the economic poll are in!</strong> The question was: <em>Will the economy affect professional sports&#8217; attendance?</em> Most of you think yes, it will.</p></blockquote>
