Andy Roddick hasn’t looked like this much of a loser since Mandy Moore broke up with him.
In his quarterfinal U.S. Open match
against Novak Djokovic, Roddick boldly balked about how it seemed as though Djokovic had about “16 injuries,” along with attributing some of his health-related issues to bird flu, anthrax, SARS and a common cold.
Needless to say, Djokovic didn’t take kindly to the taunting. And he shut Roddick up the best way possible — by beating him in five sets to advance into the semifinals.
Is it me or is anyone else wondering where Roddick gets off taunting? In order to taunt, you actually have to be at the top of your game. Because, let’s face it, then you’ve earned the right to taunt.
When is the last time Roddick won a Grand Slam?? 2003? That’s what, five years ago.
Bottom line— Roddick needs to quit buggin’!

I think the answer to this question is quite obvious, actually.
Since arriving in
Milwaukee, CC Sabathia leads the National League in starts, wins, complete games and winning percentage. He also ranks second in strikeouts and third in ERA. Oh, and I should probably mention that he’s been instrumental in catapulting the Brewers into post-league play.
If Sabathia were to win the Cy Young, that would make him the first pitcher to win the the coveted award in back-to-back leagues in consecutive seasons.
The fact that he switched leagues and still continues to dominate should be considered a positive not a negative. It’s harder to dominate against players you haven’t had the pleasure of “getting to know” throughout the season.
I’m all for Sabathia. And I know the rest of his teammates and the fans in Milwaukee are, too. After all, the Brewers haven’t been to a post season since 1982.

Every week, from here on out, throughout the 2008-2009 football season I am going to pick a “Game of the Week.”
The purpose of this post is to talk about a match-up that I think is the most significant out of all the scheduled NFL games that are going to be played the following Sunday.
After looking at the schedule, my pick for the Game of the Week is …

Once the Detroit Lions signed Rudi Johnson, Tatum Bell lost his cool.
As Johnson was busy meeting with Matt Millen to finalize the details of his contract, Bell decided to enact revenge by stealing his luggage. Johnson is replacing Bell on the depth chart, which Bell didn’t appreciate.
So how did it go down, exactly? Well, according to ProFootballTalk.com, Johnson left his luggage outside of Millen’s office and when he returned to get it … it was gone.
Bell can be spotted on surveillance video taking the luggage and reportedly ditching the bags at a female friend’s house. When asked why he took them he said, “I though they were somebody else’s.”
Talk about a disgruntled employee!

Chad Johnson, otherwise known at Ocho Cinco, is ready to play again the Baltimore Ravens.
He told ESPN that he’s “extremely focused” and that “there’s nothing wrong” with him. He’s ready to go and stick it to the Ravens (and all of his doubters as well).
I don’t know about Johnson because lately it seems that all he’s “focused” on is getting attention.
Why else would he have his last name legally changed to Ocho Cinco? (Which, I might add, isn’t even the correct spelling in Spanish for eighty-five. The correct spelling and pronunciation would be Ochenta y Cinco. So basically Johnson will now be known as eight, five. Whatever.)

Whew … aren’t we all glad that Olympics are finally finished so that we can get back to our daily sports lives?
As a friend of mine so blatantly put it, “I’m so over the Olympics!”
And onward and upward we go. Here’s what’s rumored to be happening in the sports world:

This week’s installment of For Argument’s Sake is the last time I’m going to discuss the Olympics. It’s been about three weeks of Olympics this and Olympics that and I’m ready for something new … football, perhaps?
Anyway, NBC is getting some flack for failing to mention that diver Matthew Mitcham, an
Australian gold medal winner in the Beijing Olympics, was gay. Now, there are other gay and lesbian athletes who competed at the Olympics. The only difference is that Mitcham is out to the public. He came out about six months ago and was the only out gay male athlete competing at the games. That’s a pretty big deal, I would think. But NBC didn’t mention a thing about it.
Mitcham’s mother and significant other were in the stands to support him, a trip that was fully funded by Johnson & Johnson (props to them for that!). Mitcham posted the highest score ever given to a single dive during Olympic competition.
But alas, Mitcham wasn’t featured in any side story and his medal ceremony was only posted on line. (I guess it should be noted here that after receiving his medal, Mitcham climbed into the stands and gave his mother and significant other a well-deserved hug. That, too, was not shown on air).
The NBC administration said this, “It’s not possible to cover the entire personal story of every athlete regarding their performance. … It’s just not possible to single out coverage.”
So what I want to know is this: Should NBC have mentioned that Olympic diver Matthew Mitcham was gay?
(Don’t forget to cast your vote in the poll!)
My argument is this:
As a gay individual myself, I think that having an out gay athlete at the Olympics is important, but it’s not the reason why Mitcham was there. He was there to compete. He was there to win a gold medal. He wasn’t there to be an advocate.
I think that his come behind win deserved a bit more attention and, yes, his medal ceremony should have been showed. It would have been nice to see him rush into the stands to hug his mother and his significant other, have the NBC commentator say, “that’s so and so” and then that was it. A nice moment captured on television — nothing more, nothing less. It would have been nice if it was just a non issue. Because, really, that’s what it should be. Mitcham shouldn’t have been given any special treatment because he is gay or any less special treatment because he is gay. It should have been mentioned as an aside, but not focused on.
I think NBC should have at least commented on the fact that Johnson & Johnson stepped up and financed his mother and his partner’s trip to Bejing. And that’s it. Is that so hard? Would that have really been such a big deal? It would have recognized the significance without making it a gay issue or supposedly offending anyone either.
That’s my take. If you choose to leave a comment below, please be respectful.
The results of the Alicia Sacramone poll are in! The question was: Was Alicia Sacramone robbed by the judges? An overwhelming majority of you think that, yes, she was totally robbed and should have won the bronze medal.

Michael Strahan could very well have his own “the hall of fame quarterback who shall not be named” moment.
That’s right. Strahan is considering a return to the New York Giants for one last farewell season. What is it about the lure of “just one more?”
I mean, I’m a compassionate person. I know it’s hard to let go of something that has basically been all you’ve known for 15 some odd years or so. But come on. Sometimes is just time to walk away a la Barry Sanders.
But Strahan’s even got a better storybook ending. He has the opportunity to walk away as a World Champion. He has the opportunity to capitalize on his signature gapped-tooth smile by showing his familiar mug on Fox Sports as an NFL analyst . it’s also rumored that he’ll be showered with endorsement spots and possible movie and television cameos. What could be better than that?
hmmmm … 8 million dollars perhaps?
Now that defensive end Osi Umenyiora is down and out for the season, the Giants desperately need someone to take his place. They were going to offer Jason Taylor 8 million dollars before he slipped away to the Redskins. So now Strahan is reportedly saying, “offer me the same and I’ll see what I can do.”
I think Strahan should stay put. Going back to the Giants for another season doesn’t seem like the better option. And winning another Superbowl in such dramatic fashion, well lighting doesn’t strike twice … or does it?
Here’s a video clip of Strahan giving a victory speech after the Giants won the 2007-2008 Superbowl. All of the fans are chanting “one more year!” Maybe they knew something we didn’t?
